SKN Clinic’s Top 5 Ways to Restore Collagen at Home
Written by Amanda Beisel

The team at SKN Clinic has tested and created many skincare products, devices and treatments over the past 8 years and here are our top picks for restoring collagen in the comfort of your home.

We are firm believers that if you want to achieve healthy, youthful skin and an optimal functioning body you need to commit to a daily home care program. This program should include well-formulated skincare, high-quality supplements, daily physical activity, proper nutrition and soul nourishment.

#1 Apply Vitamin A Serum to your skin at night

Vitamin A is the most effective topical ingredient for stimulating collagen and has the most research and clinical to back up it’s efficacy. A few years back, a team of chemists in the US worked really hard to revolutionize the way we use Vitamin A by creating a form that was less irritating than the prescription form known as Retinoic Acid.

After being told this would be impossible, they proved the experts wrong and created Iconic A Encapsulated Retinaldehyde. Iconic A helps skin produce collagen, improve the skin’s texture, reduce discolouration, fine lines, wrinkles and skin texture by helping to enhance the firmness & thickness of the skin. It also stimulates cell turnover ensuring that your skin is looking bright and fresh.

#2 Apply vitamin C powder to your skin every morning

The strongest and most potent form of Vitamin C available for topical application is l-ascorbic acid. This powerful antioxidant works alongside Iconic A Encapsulated Retinaldehyde to synthesis collagen.

It is a important to note that l-ascorbic acid is very unstable and light sensitive so it should always be in a powder form and mixed into the appropriate serum at time of use each day. L-ascorbic acid also provides the skin with photo-protection, lightening benefits for pigmentation and an overall brightness for the skin.

Due to its potency, this form of Vitamin C is not recommended for rosacea skin or highly sensitive skin.

#3 Roll your skin weekly with the Skin Spin Roller System

The Skin Spin Roller System is a simple anti-aging tool that has multiple benefits keeping your skin looking youthful and vibrant. The concept of skin needling has to do with the ability of our skin to heal and repair itself. When rolling with the SKIN SPIN it creates hundreds of tiny dermal injuries that trigger the body’s healing response. Once the healing response is triggered the transformation begins via collagen promotion. Oh and we should mention it is great to target crow’s feet too!

#4 Apply Hyaluronic Acid to your skin and drink it everyday

Hyaluronic acid is an essential component of the skin because of its ability to promote, nourish and hydrate collagen. Hyaluronic acid retains water, keeping the collagen moist and elastic and is essential to take both internally and apply topically for maximum full body benefits.

Hyaluronic acid retains 1,000 times its weight in water within the skin’s cells keeping our skin plump and our joints nourished. No other biological substance can retain as much water as hyaluronic acid, making our skin smooth and soft with fewer wrinkles.

#5 Drink your collagen in the Morning

The addition of a high grade collagen supplement can provide tremendous benefits for skin, joints and bone health. WithinUs TruMarine™ is a Type I collagen – the most abundant form. Studies show that hydrolyzed collagen derived from fish scales consists of small peptide molecules that have superior bioavailability and digestibility when compared with other collagen products. Due to their lower molecular weight, these peptides are absorbed at a higher level through the intestinal barrier into the bloodstream, where they are then carried through the body, leading to collagen synthesis in the joint tissues, bones and skin dermis. WithinUs Trumarine Collagen is a Vancouver based company and can be found at SKN Clinic or online at

Your body is a temple that keeps you alive, your skin is a shield that protects you, and they both deserve to be nourished with vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants and lots of love. It is our mission at SKN Clinic to provide our clients with honest skincare advice, well formulated products and a friendly, trustworthy environment to nourish your mind, body and spirit.

Beautiful Skin Requires Commitment, Not a Miracle
Written by Tamara Hughes
Why this Ernő László quote captures the essence of skincare.

woman's faceWhether we are lining up a date or streaming last night’s episode of our favourite program, we are a generation that demands instant gratification. Wish all you want, there is still no magic potion that we can whip up for impressive skin in as little time as it takes to order a coffee.

Naturally, skincare is a long-term investment. The effort you put in may not generate an instant difference, however if you adopt a few healthy and balanced lifestyle practices now, we assure the satisfaction will certainly come later on.

Taking care of your skin involves more than merely slapping a couple of products on it. You know you should drink water, and I recommend committing to a minimum of 8 glasses a day to really hydrate and flush out toxins. It is additionally essential to add colourful veggies to your diet. They are loaded with antioxidants that assist skin in combating those damaging pollutants.

According to skincare specialists, you must also put on an SPF on a daily basis not just in the summer season. Search for products with reparative antioxidants to increase excellent skin from the outside in.

While you may not see results as quick as you want, the earlier you adopt a wellrounded skincare routine that integrates healthy and balanced habits, the quicker it will pay off in the future and the longer the benefits will last.

Recognizing that, delayed satisfaction doesn’t sound so bad now does it?

There comes a time in every woman’s life when she has a very specific decision to make. That day may come when she is home in bed internet surfing, staring at herself in the mirror or she may be standing at the beauty counter after wandering into a store while window shopping. She is now face to face with a shelf loaded of white and shiny, pristine containers of tonics and creams, serums and oils, things that foam, peels and scrubs, all promising results.

She will go home and ask herself and wonder if she should have just bought that cream because the one she has could possibly use an upgrade.

It’s time for an intervention and it’s time we started talking, taking into consideration investment skincare and professional spa treatments. As soon as you discover that one or two incredibly special things that work for your skin, it may be time to start splurging on yourself.

People will certainly cringe if I totalled my skin expenditures for the year. Given that I will only have one skin for the remainder of my life, however long or short that may be, I want to take care of it as best as I possibly can. This consists of investing in quality products and professional spa treatments that are actually beneficial to one’s skin.

It’s amazing just how much people will spend on materialistic items that can easily be replaced. When it boils down to their skin and their health, hands are short and pockets are deep.

Each to their own, they have probably worked hard for their money, and so have I! I choose to invest my hard earned money on my skin.

Excellent skin requires commitment and dedication, not a miracle. Every morning and evening, you should devote some time to take care of your skin. 10 minutes is all you need. You spend more time doing things that you probably won’t remember, if you think about it.

Drink Your Way to Youthful Skin and a Healthy Body
Written by Amanda Beisel
Visibly healthy skin from the inside out

green drinkTransform your morning smoothie into an anti-aging elixir with the addition of four youth-enhancing ingredients. I am a self-confessed superfoods junkie and this addiction serves my mind, body and spirit, keeping me healthy and energized. Having a smoothie in the morning is a great way to feed your body a high dose of nutrition, antioxidants and superfoods.

What are you putting in your smoothie? Gone are the days of yogurt, juice and high sugar smoothies. You want your smoothie to sustain you throughout the day. The best way to do this is to pack it full of cell-nourishing, collagenboosting, glow-enhancing, powerhouse ingredients. Aside from great looking skin, you can also expect improved energy, mood, bone health, and joint health. Your body is your temple and your skin protects you, so it deserves daily love and nourishment.

#1: COLLAGEN. Fight those lines and wrinkles.

Collagen is a natural “anti-aging” protein that makes up about a third of the protein content in your body. Collagen, and elastin give the skin its firmness, elasticity, strength and structure. Over time, your collagen production slows down and is disrupted as part of the natural aging process. Great news is that you can replenish your collagen levels with a high quality supplement. Your skin, joints, hair, and bones will benefit from this healthy habit.

Remember that your lifestyle is in direct correlation to the health of your collagen too. Environmental stresses, nutrition, skin damage, cigarette smoke, recreational drugs, unhealthy diet, too much sugar, and alcohol will accelerate the loss of collagen. So it may be time to reassess your lifestyle and make some healthy changes that will benefit your health. Get rid of the old collagen killing habits to invite in collagen loving habits.

Recommended Product: TruMarine Collagen Supplement (Made in Canada)

#2: HYALURONIC ACID. Plump up and nourish the skin.

Hyaluronic acid is an essential component of the skin because of its ability to promote collagen. Collagen firms the skin while hyaluronic acid nourishes and hydrates the collagen. Hyaluronic acid retains the water, keeping the collagen moist and elastic. The reason hyaluronic acid is essential in skin care is because it retains 1,000 times its weight in water within the skin’s cells. No other biological substance can retain as much water as hyaluronic acid making our skin smooth and soft with few wrinkles.

Young people have plump, smooth, and highly elastic skin because they have high concentrations of hyaluronic acid. As we grow older, the body produces less hyaluronic acid, causing the hyaluronic acid concentration in the skin to fall. Around age 40, aging becomes more visible as our skin loses elasticity, forming lines and wrinkles.

Just like your collagen needs topping up each day, so does your hyaluronic acid. Just 2 tsp a day in your smoothie will ensure your skin, and joints are functioning at their optimal levels. This supplement is also great for dry scalp, and those prone to eczema and dry patches.

#3: GLUTATHIONE. Turn back the hands of time.

Glutathione is a must-have in a serious anti-aging program. It is a substance found in every cell in the body. It acts as an antioxidant to neutralize free radicals and prevent cellular damage. Glutathione levels in the body start to decrease as we get older; and a decline of glutathione in the body will speed up the aging process. Glutathione has been proven to help lighten pigmentation and reduce melasma as well as bring a bright glow back to your complexion.

Supplementing with Glutathione is a must in an anti-aging program and also for those looking to achieve and maintain optimal health.

Recommended Supplement: Glow Molecule by Fountain Beauty (Made in Canada)

#4: TUMERIC. Fight Inflammation and slow down aging.

Tumeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory that has a long list of skin and health benefits. The active ingredient is curcumin which has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Adding a 1/3 tsp of curcumin to your smoothie each day will reduce age accelerating inflammation. It also has been proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, asthma, cancer, diabetes, and depression.

Recommended Supplement: Organic Traditions Full Spectrum Tumeric Powder

Start each day in a strong way by nourishing your body with nutrients, antioxidants, and superfoods. You will start to feel an increase in overall energy, a decrease in your stress levels, and a more balanced state of being. Aside from those incredible benefits, your skin will start to look brighter and healthier. Make today the day you start honouring your body and consciously choose what goes into it. Remember, you truly are what you eat.

The Vitamin A Infusion Peel
Written by Amanda Beisel
Restore, Remodel and Rejuvenate

woman's face with hands surrounding it When we hear the word “peel,” we tend to immediately think “chemical peel,” but in the past few years, new approaches to peeling and rejuvenating the skin have emerged. One of the most effective and innovative of these is the vitamin A infusion peel. This non-acid peel is transforming the way people think about peels.

The vitamin A infusion peel is a non-acid retinaldehyde peel that is boosted with powerful antioxidants and nutrients that help repair and remodel the skin. Retinaldehyde is the most potent and least irritating form of vitamin A. The vitamin A infusion peel is customized to meet each client’s specific skin needs and concerns. The skincare practitioner creates a custom blend of antioxidants and nutrients that is mixed with the concentrated vitamin A prior to application.

The vitamin A peel is extremely safe and tolerated well by all skin types. This diverse peel is not just used for anti-aging, it is also an effective treatment option for acne, rosacea, melasma and hyper-pigmentation. The practitioner customizes the peel to meet the skin needs of each client.

The vitamin A infusion peel works much differently than a chemical peel. Rather than peeling from the outer layers, it works from the inside out building healthy new cells that increase cell turnover causing the skin to shed the top layer. This is made possible using a concentrated form of vitamin A that is liposome-coated to help it easily pass through the skin barrier. Once the vitamin A has penetrated deep within the skin, it stimulates the formation of new, healthy cells and the magic begins. Here are just a few of the benefits you can expect:

  • Stimulates collagen
  • Increased capillary flow to help increase food supply to the skin
  • Thickens the dermis preventing the skin from thinning
  • Calms and reduces acne
  • Calms mild rosacea
  • Lightens hyperpigmentation and melasma
  • Reduction in fine lines and improved skin tone and elasticity
  • Normalized oil production

One of the best features of the vitamin A peel is that it is relaxing and rejuvenating. The treatment experience is similar to a facial but the results are clinical. You can take the treatment a step further with the addition of cosmetic acupuncture. Plus, if you have extended benefits for acupuncture, a portion of this treatment can be covered.

Skin Advice: Managing Open Pores
Written by Irena Gavrilov

woman's facePores are the openings of hair follicles. Each one contains a sebaceous gland, which produces your skin's oils. The size of our pores is actually determined by genetics. When the pores become clogged with makeup, dirt and oils, they appear larger. This is also the main cause of blackheads and whiteheads. Loss of elasticity and aging of the skin can also make them appear larger.

The most ancient remedy for pores is to steam the skin. However, you can't steam pores open because they don’t have muscles around their opening to allow them to open and close. So it may help loosen up the underlying debris for easier removal of blackheads, but harsh extraction can cause scar tissue underneath the skin and over time, put you in danger of permanently enlarged pores. Gentle daily or weekly exfoliators and microdermabrasion performed by a professional aesthetician will not damage pores.

The key to smaller pours is to cleanse and exfoliate with quality skin care products that are also free of toxic chemicals. A gentle diamond tip microdermabrasion at least once every 2-3 weeks will cleanse the pores and over time, shrink them. Once desired results are achieved, this process should be followed once every 6-8 weeks.

If you have oily to combination skin, it is important not to use cleansers and creams that are thick or greasy, as this will cause more clogging. Use only gentle water-soluble cleansers and avoid bar soaps. On the other hand, dry flaky skin can also lead to clogged pores, so a weekly exfoliation and daily hydration with a moisture-rich product are necessary. It is very important to wash your face after exercising and before going to bed. Bacteria from sweat, dirt and makeup will contribute to breakouts and clogged pores regardless of your skin type.

Avoid makeup and skin care that has an ingredient called dimethicone, a silicone oil that puts a film on the skin like plastic wrap, which means the skin can't breathe and it also interferes with the skins natural oils and barrier. Also avoid talc, which often contains asbestos, which may cause serious health problems. It also gets caught inside the pores and enlarges them. Look for organic skin care products and makeup that are actually healing for the skin and over time can help reduce acne, breakouts, scaring and large pores!
