Assimilation and Digestion

orange with the top sliced off and juice sloshing outJuicing allows our digestion to take a breather. Within whole fruits and vegetables is an indigestible fiber called cellulose. Cellulose houses enzymes, phytochemicals, vitamins A, C, and E, and minerals like iron, copper, potassium, sodium, iodine, and magnesium.

Cold pressed juicing provides access to these nutrients by breaking down the cellulose with a ‘squeezing’ action. The nutrients can then be taken in by our cells within 15 minutes, a process that can take more than an hour when the pulp is intact. This is an energy saver for the body. The energy saved from digestion can now go to detoxifying, cleansing, or recovery from physical activity or illness.

Hydration

Juice supplies the body with alkalizing water rich in vitamins and minerals that are vital to immune and metabolic function. It is a great way supplement the recommended daily water consumption requirement of 2.2 litres for women and 3 litres for men.

The adult human body is about 55-60% water. Water is vital to the life of every cell, acting as the first building material. It regulates temperature, helps metabolize and transport nutrients, flushes out waste, lubricates joints, forms saliva and acts as a shock absorber for the brain, spinal cord and, in pregnant women, protects the fetus.

Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is the green pigment found exclusively in plants and algae’s. It increases the delivery of oxygen to cells by enhancing the body’s ability to produce hemoglobin.

Chlorophyll contains therapeutic doses of magnesium, vitamin K, C, folic acid, iron, calcium and protein. It is necessary for rebuilding and repairing red blood cells, bone formation, nerve function, muscle function and boosting the immune system. It is proficient at chelating heavy metals from the body, is an anti-oxidant, and is anti-inflammatory. Chlorophyll is also anti-candida, anti-carcinogenic and is abundant in any green coloured natural juice!

Energy

The natural sugars found in fruit and vegetable juices come brimming with vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytochemicals, not found in refined sugars. Natural sugars dish out the same energy as pop, pastries and candy, without the chemicals, rancid fats, artificial flavours and colours.

Optimize Your Juice Game

So you’ve decided to make juicing a part of your health and nutrition regimen. What next? Follow these tips to get the best results.

  • Stick to mostly green juices. Fruitier, sweeter juices are more of a treat, unless your lifestyle requires extra carbohydrates.
  • Drink on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes away from food. This allows your body better access to nutrients and uses the least amount of digestive energy.
  • Take your time. This isn’t a beer chugging contest. Enjoy the complex flavours, roll the juice around in your mouth, give your digestive enzymes the time they need to properly break down your healing beverage.
  • Sit down and relax. This engages the parasympathetic system, which is responsible for resting and digesting.
  • Go organic! Conventional fruits and vegetables are laden with herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. Juicing will compound these chemicals. If you are concerned about price, abide by The Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen.
