cookiesShorter days, darkness and rain. Colds and flus. It’s that time of the year! And inevitably, if one person in your family gets sick, it’ll infect the entire crew.

How can you keep your family healthy and active this winter? Pick up some tips from this year’s Wellness Show at the Vancouver Convention Centre, February 12-14, 2016.

2016 features a new section just for you: Healthy Families: a “how-to” stage with whole-family solutions. You’ll also be able to attend workshops on urban gardening presented by Life Space Gardens, and let your kids burn some energy in the Kids Activity Area.

Get your kids involved in the kitchen with Chef Bongo and super chefs of the universe, who will be demonstrating how to make fresh pasta. Jennifer Browne, cookbook author, will share two kid-friendly recipes: Nut-Free Bliss Balls and Sprouted Endive Boats. In addition, Chef Alana Peckham will show you how to make Vegan Pita Sandwiches—perfect for the school lunch box.

Rest is incredibly important for wellness and immunity, and those of us with young children and babies are usually quite sleep-deprived! Learn natural methods for getting your kids to sleep from Clinical Aromatherapist, Heather Gibson. She’ll also be demonstrating how to make your own allergen-free lotions and salves, from diaper creams to romantic massage lotions.

With after-school activities, homework, work, getting dinner on the table… it’s no wonder that families today are stressed out! Learn coping techniques from Dr. Joyce Johnson, a naturopath who specializes in helping families deal with the challenges of life in a healthy manner.

Many of us know our kids would benefit from nutritional supplements, for things like ADHD, autism, and mental focus, but we have no idea where to start. David Stephan has spent the last 12 years assisting families with just this problem. He will supply you with the information you need to make informed decisions about which supplements will benefit your kids’ development and behaviour.

Healthy Breakfast Cookies

Who doesn’t like eating cookies for breakfast? Packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, these Healthy Breakfast Cookies by Lisa Schmidt were the winner of The Wellness Show’s Healthy Baking Contest last year, and make a great grab-and-go breakfast or a filling after-school snack.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Alligga flaxseed oil (available at Nesters Market)
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup chopped dried apricots
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or almonds

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Cream oil, honey and sugar.
  3. Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
  4. Mix in flour with the baking power, soda and salt and add to creamed mixture.
  5. Fold in the oats, dried fruit, nuts and coconut and mix well.
  6. Drop with an ice-cream scoop onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Bake at 350 degrees until slightly browned (12 minutes or so—turn cookie sheet around half-way during baking).
